Overview

The Department of Neonatology at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital delivers the highest standard of care for critically ill newborns, preterm infants, and babies with complex medical or surgical conditions. Our multidisciplinary team, including senior neonatologists, neonatal nurses, paediatric subspecialists (such as cardiology, neurology, genetics), early intervention therapists, and nutrition experts, aims to provide comprehensive, 24/7, personalised care

As a tertiary care, multi-speciality hospital, we follow evidence-based protocols, with a strong focus on family-centred care, ensuring that parents and caregivers feel fully supported throughout their baby’s treatment journey.

The Tower

The period before, during, and after birth is vital for your newborn’s health, especially if they are born prematurely or have a very low birth weight. To support newborns through this delicate phase, we provide the following range of services:

  • Ventilatory therapy: Advanced respiratory support through both invasive and non-invasive ventilation tailored to newborns’ needs.
  • Therapeutic hypothermia: A cooling treatment used to protect the brain in newborns with oxygen deprivation at birth.
  • Medical management for congenital heart diseases: Specialised care for babies born with heart defects.
  • Intravenous nutrition: Provides essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream when oral feeding is not possible.
  • Rational antibiotic therapy: Safe and targeted use of antibiotics to manage infections while avoiding unnecessary medication.
  • Newborn infections and sepsis management: Expert diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases in neonates.
  • Care for extremely premature and low birth weight babies: Specialised monitoring and care to support fragile newborns in their critical early days.
  • Phototherapy and exchange transfusion: Effective treatment for neonatal jaundice to reduce high bilirubin levels.
  • Lactational management & skin-to-skin care: Support for breastfeeding and promoting through kangaroo mother care.
  • Early intervention and rehabilitation: Developmental assessments and therapies to support long-term growth and development.
The Tower

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is equipped with advanced infrastructure to care for critically ill, premature, or medically complex newborns. From cutting-edge life support systems to specialised surgical facilities, our NICU provides a safe, high-tech environment where newborns receive round-the-clock monitoring and treatment.

At Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, the entire 12th floor is dedicated exclusively to Maternity and Newborn Care.

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a state-of-the-art 9 bedded, well-equipped, tertiary care unit for high risk neonates. For those newborns who are not critically ill but require special care, we have another 9 bedded Special Care Newborn Unit (SCBU). Both NICU and SCBU are well staffed by doctors and nurses specially trained in neonatal care.

We have ultra-modern neonatal incubators including transport incubators, invasive and non-invasive ventilators, high frequency ventilator, phototherapy units, bili-blankets, multipara monitors, invasive blood pressure monitors, etc.

The Tower

At our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, we provide expert care for a wide range of newborn conditions that require immediate and specialised attention.

  • Respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and meconium aspiration: Breathing difficulties in newborns caused by immature lungs, infection, or inhalation of stool before or during birth.
  • Perinatal cerebral depression and asphyxia: Brain dysfunction or oxygen deprivation around the time of birth, potentially affecting long-term development.
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension: A condition where a newborn’s circulation continues to bypass the lungs, leading to low oxygen levels.
  • Congenital heart disease: Structural abnormalities in the heart present at birth, affecting blood flow and oxygen delivery.
  • Necrotising enterocolitis and other surgical emergencies: A severe intestinal disease in premature infants and other urgent abdominal conditions needing surgery.
  • Neonatal seizures: Involuntary movements or abnormal brain activity in newborns are often caused by underlying neurological or metabolic issues.
  • Jaundice: A common newborn condition where excess bilirubin causes yellowing of the skin and eyes, sometimes needing phototherapy.
  • Haematological and metabolic conditions: Blood and chemical imbalances in newborns, such as anaemia, clotting disorders, or enzyme deficiencies.
