Radiation Oncology Home Centre of Excellence Institute of Oncosciences Radiation Oncology Overview The Department of Radiation Oncology at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital provides advanced, individualised cancer care with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. Our department offers patient-centred cancer care using advanced radiation therapy techniques supported by highly skilled oncologists, medical physicists, and radiation therapists who work collaboratively to design personalised treatment plans. Our department is the pioneer of surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) in India. We also specialise in radiotherapy consultations, RapidArc volumetric modulated adaptive radiotherapy, image-guided radiation therapy, palliative care, onco-rehabilitation, and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy. We prioritise precision and safety, aiming to target cancer cells while minimising the impact on healthy tissues. Our Services Technology & Infrastructure Conditions We Treat Our department provides a wide range of services for different stages of cancer treatment:Radiotherapy consultationSecond-opinion consultationsConsultations with the multidisciplinary tumour board (MDTB) for multidisciplinary carePost treatment follow-up careOnco-dermatology services for the management of skin reactions in patients undergoing radiotherapy. Radiotherapy treatments for various cancers:Surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT): A non-invasive technique in which 3D imaging is used to guide the positioning of, and tracking the target area in, cancer patients for radiation therapy.Adaptive radiotherapy with SGRT: The use of SGRT to perform adaptive radiotherapy, a technique in which the treatment plan is adjusted on the basis of the changes in the tumour size and the patient’s condition.RapidArc volumetric modulated adaptive radiotherapy: An advanced form of external radiotherapy in which a machine rotates around the cancer patient, delivering a precise radiation dose in a quick 360° arc, reducing treatment time.Image-guided radiation therapy: A technique in which images from the patient are acquired before and after radiation treatment to enhance the precision and accuracy of the treatment while minimising damage to the surrounding healthy tissues.Intensity-modulated radiotherapy: An advanced radiotherapy technique in which the radiation intensities are carefully regulated and the radiation beams are shaped by the tumour's shape using a computer-controlled system; this helps enhance the treatment accuracy and minimise the damage to healthy tissues.Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy: A precise, advanced radiotherapy technique in which 3D images of the tumour(s) are first generated. Then, radiation beams are shaped (conformed) according to these images for precise delivery to the tumour(s).Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy: SRS is a precise, targeted, non-surgical technique in which imaging techniques are used to pinpoint the tumour location, and then large doses of radiation are administered to target the tumour; usually, this is performed to treat tumours in the brain and spine. Stereotactic body radiotherapy is used when SRS treats tumours in body parts other than the brain and spine (lungs, liver, and soft tissues).Brachytherapy: A type of internal radiation therapy in which the radioactive material is placed directly within or near the tumour(s) for maximum impact with minimal exposure elsewhere. Palliative care and symptomatic management: We have a dedicated pain and palliative care department that focuses on providing cancer patients relief from various types of discomfort and symptoms resulting from the cancer itself or the cancer treatment. Know more WeCan cancer support group: A compassionate initiative by our Oncology team since 2017 which has blossomed into a vibrant community for cancer patients and their caregivers. Know more Onco-rehabilitation services, such as dietician consultation, physiotherapy, speech and swallowing therapy, counselling, and yoga therapy for patients undergoing radiotherapy. Know more Our department is equipped with India’s first and the most advanced ETHOS linear accelerator with SGRT. It is the only facility in Maharashtra offering Adaptive Radiotherapy, in which individual patients are provided highly customised radiotherapy each day depending on the status of the tumour and internal organs. Additionally, we boast the following advanced radiotherapy equipment/facilities:ETHOS adaptive linear accelerator with SGRT: This ground-breaking device welcomes patients to a new era of cancer treatment. ETHOS places us at the forefront of the revolutionary adaptive intelligence-based precision radiotherapy technology. This device offers the following advantages:Customised treatment for every patient every day: The creation of personalised treatment plans based on the individual’s unique anatomy and changes in the tumour over time.Enhanced tumour-control precision, accuracy, and minimal side effects: Precise tumour targeting, even when the tumour moves due to the patient’s breathing or motion of the organs. This ensures optimal treatment, improved outcomes, and minimal side effects.Faster treatment and better outcomes: The patient’s time on the machine is reduced, making the process more comfortable.Integrated tumour tracking daily: Improved tumour visibility.Enhanced safety: The rigid safety protocols during radiotherapy planning and treatment ensure that there is no room for error and that the treatment is delivered precisely and safely.Improved patient experience and quality of life: Minimal disruptions to the patient’s daily lives. The streamlined workflow and reduced treatment times enable patients to spend less time in the treatment room and more time with their loved ones while focusing on their recovery. The unique combination of SGRT and ETHOS: Continuous tracking of the patient’s body ensures precise treatment and prevents us from putting any permanent markings on the patient’s body. TrueBeam STx linear accelerator with SGRT: Our department launched India’s first ever most advanced TrueBeam STx linear accelerator in 2015. This device specialises in providing high-precision radiation treatments, especially for children. This linear accelerator is also equipped with SGRT, making it India’s first-ever SGRT facility. Varian brachytherapy GammaMedplus iX: This device is one of the best for performing brachytherapy. It possesses precise tumour-targeting ability and accuracy and has been designed as an easy-to-use system, considering patientcomfort. Radiotherapy quality assurance (QA): We follow strict guidelines to ensure the QA of the equipment and the QA of each patient’s radiotherapy treatment plan. In the case of adaptive radiotherapy, the QA is performed every day, and a new adaptive plan is designed. Thus, we ensure that every radiation treatment plan is strictly regulated and checked.
