Head & Neck Surgical Oncology

Overview

Our head and neck surgical oncology team provides expert care for tumours of the oral cavity, throat, larynx, thyroid, and salivary glands focusing on speech, swallowing, and facial aesthetics.

The Tower
  • Diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumours.
  • Voice and swallowing preservation strategies
  • Reconstructive surgery for correcting head and neck defects.

  • Specialised services
    • Minimally invasive surgeries, such as complete or partial thyroid and parathyroid removal surgeries, with a focus on hormonal balance.
    • Voice rehabilitation and voice prosthesis placement post-laryngectomy: A small valve-like device that functions as an artificial voice box (prosthesis) is placed after the larynx has been removed.
    • Swallowing therapy and functional restoration

  • Advanced surgical techniques: Along with highly advanced, cutting-edge surgical techniques, rendered safe by technologies such as intra-operative nerve monitoring (IONM) and Spy-phi, a fluorescence imaging device, we offer the following advanced surgical services:
    • Transoral robotic surgery (TORS): Minimally invasive robotic system-guided surgery for treating oropharyngeal cancer, reducing recovery time and preserving function.
    • Transoral laser microsurgery (TLM): Minimally invasive laser-guided surgery for treating oropharyngeal cancer; this enables patients to retain their voice and swallowing abilities.
    • Endoscopic skull base surgery: Minimally invasive endoscopy-based surgery for treating tumours at the base of the skull; this helps minimise trauma while achieving precise tumour removal.

  • Microsurgical reconstruction
    • Fibula free flap: A type of reconstructive surgery in which a piece of the fibula, the smaller outer bone in the leg, along with its blood vessels, is transferred onto the jaw after tumour removal; this helps restore jaw function and appearance.
    • Radial forearm and anterolateral thigh flaps: A type of reconstructive surgery in which a piece of the forearm, along with the blood vessels (radial artery and veins), or a piece of the outer thigh, along with the blood vessels, is transferred onto the mouth or throat after tumour resection; this helps preserve facial aesthetics and speech clarity.
    • Facial nerve grafting: A surgical procedure in which a nerve is harvested either from the healthy side of the face or the back of the leg and transplanted onto the face after surgery for facial paralysis; this enhances facial symmetry and expression post-surgery.
  • Early detection of throat or oral cancers can markedly improve outcomes.
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding tobacco use reduces cancer risks.
  • Post-treatment speech and swallowing therapy enhances recovery.
