Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgical Oncology

Overview

Our HPB surgical oncology team focuses on the expert management of liver, pancreatic, and biliary diseases with a focus on rapid recovery and maintaining digestive function.

The Tower
  • Minimally invasive and robotic liver and pancreatic surgery
  • Liver transplantation and complex hepatic resections
  • Biliary reconstruction for bile duct injuries and biliary strictures (narrowing or blocking of the bile duct).

  • Specialised services
    • Biliary reconstruction and stenting for obstructive jaundice, which refers to the blockage of bile flow causing the buildup of bile in the body.
    • Consultations with the multidisciplinary tumour board for hepatic cancers.

  • Advanced surgical techniques
    • Robotic liver resection: A minimally invasive robotic system-guided surgical procedure to remove portions of the liver; this minimises pain and duration of hospitalisation.
    • Whipple procedure: Removal of the pancreas, duodenum, and bile duct when they are affected by cancer; this is a procedure for the precise removal of pancreatic tumours while preserving nutritional status.
    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: A minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing the gall bladder via small incisions in the abdomen (laparoscopy); this reduces the chances of post-operative complications.
    • Biliary surgery and reconstruction: These are surgical procedures for removing and replacing/repairing bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine, aiding digestion and waste generation; these techniques help prevent long-term digestive issues post-surgery.
    • Vascular resection and reconstruction: These are surgical procedures for removing and replacing/repairing blood vessels; these help preserve blood flow for better organ function.
  • Early symptoms of liver disease can include jaundice and unexplained weight loss.
  • Hepatitis vaccinations can prevent some liver cancers.
  • Dietary modifications can aid in liver health and recovery.
